Killing Goliath- The Story of the Little Valley Fire

Part of the Richard A. Harris Series of Continuing Legal Education

In October of 2016, the Nevada Division of Forestry conducted the controlled burn on land owned by the University of Nevada. The fire was intended to clear out overgrown vegetation to prevent future wildland fires, while giving the university a chance to study fire's impact on the ecosystem. That evening, 60 mile per hour winds re-ignited the still smoldering embers causing a fire that spread into Washoe Valley burning 2300 acres and destroying 23 homes and 19 other buildings.

Plaintiff attorneys, Matt Sharp and Bill Jeanney will discuss the techniques used and how they were able to slay “Goliath” and receive a favorable verdict for victims of the Little Valley Fire including:

  • Empowering a jury during jury selection by recognizing and dealing with bias jurors
  • Empowering the jury to find gross negligence
  • Avoiding the pitfalls of a compromised verdict
  • Utilizing defense witnesses to become your best evidence
